ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems

Requirements & Certification

Hosted & Funded by Peel & Shaw Consulting

Tuesday 13 March 2012

Aston Customer Service Centre, Sheffield

09:30 – 11:30

This FREE workshop will help you understand how an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) can be used to drive both commercial and environmental performance improvement in your organisation.  It has been designed specifically for senior managers in small and medium-sized businesses who:

a)  Want to understand how ISO14001 can be implemented simply but effectively and how this can be used to create tangible business value, or

b)  Want to maximise the value from their existing system in order to support new business development and performance goals.

ISO 14001 is the internationally recognised standard that sets out a framework for putting an effective EMS in place.  It can be readily integrated into existing ISO systems, most notably ISO 9001.

A recent Government commissioned study of UK SMEs who have already introduced an EMS highlighted that whilst the majority had realised net cost savings- with payback as quick as 3 months- commercial and marketing benefits translating to new turnover were of equal if not greater benefit.  BSI’s own survey data also found that over 80% of UK organizations with ISO 14001 believe that it had improved their reputation whist a similar number reported reduced risk through an increase in legislative compliance.

The workshop will outline the growing business case for ISO 14001 as an effective mechanism for driving business performance through environmental improvement.  We will identify some of the common benefits, illustrating these through examples.  In addition to this, we will also try to lower some commonly perceived barriers to adoption, before finally offering some tips on how to start implementing an effective system.

CE Marking of fabricated structural steel

The British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) anticipates that the CE Marking of fabricated structural steelwork in accordance with BS EN 1090-1 will come into force shortly. There will begin a period of co-existence, when either national provisions or CE Marking may be used, which will end on 01 July 2012. From that date, CE Marking of fabricated structural steelwork will become mandatory in most EU member states. It is likely to remain optional in the UK and Republic of Ireland for a further year until the Construction Products Directive (CPD) is replaced by the Construction Products Regulations (CPR).

The expected timetable for CE Marking of fabricated steelwork is:

  • CE Marking voluntary – 01 December 2010
  • CE Marking mandatory in most member states – 01 July 2012
  • CE Marking mandatory in the UK and RoI – Mid 2013

Are you as a small to medium size structural steel fabricators in a position to provide CE Marking of Structural Steel come 2012 or mid 2013? Could this be a dilema for you?

The start of the rout to CE Marking is to have a reconised quality management system to ISO 9001 and a welding quality management system to ISO 3834.

In 2010, the BCSA launched a CE Marking version of the 5th edition of the National Structural Steelwork Specification (NSSS) for Building Construction. This version is fully compliant with the new European standard for fabrication, BS EN 1090-2 and the CE Marking standard BS EN 1090-1.

BS EN ISO 3834 Quality Requirements for Fusion Welding of Metallic Materials

ISO 3834 is an international standard created by welding professionals.  It provides the quality requirements for a welded product.  It specifies requirements relating only to the quality of the welded product and encourages a proactive process orientated approach to managing and controlling welding product quality in a workshop or on site.  It also acts as a Factory Control System to control activities for the manufacture of the product

There are three levels of quality requirements specified in ISO 3834-2, ISO 3834-3 and ISO 3834-4.  The standard applies to manufacturing, both in workshops and at field installation sites.

ISO 3834 provide the quality requirements for process control related to all welding processes (for each process separately or in combination as specified).  It is suitable for manufacturers to use on their own or in conjunction with ISO 9001.  The ISO 3834 series supersedes BS EN 729:1995 Parts 1-4.

Benefits

  • More assurance of contract delivery dates;
  • Greater assurance of the quality of welded products;
  • Greater reliability and performance of plant;
  • Reduction in maintenance costs;
  • Reduction or elimination of third party inspection costs;
  • Local and international recognition as a competent organisation
  • Meet the welding-related requirements of ISO 9001
  • More efficient coordination of welding activities
  • Increased opportunities and capability to bid on jobs
  • Cost savings – more efficient technology
  • Reduced surveillance audits and inspections by purchasers with significant savings.

Why adopt BS EN ISO 3834 when we have ISO 9001?

  • BS EN ISO 3834 is part of the requirement for CE Marking of fabricated structural steel to ISO 1090.
  • ISO 9001 is a comprehensive standard that lays down quality management system requirements for any organisation;
  • ISO 9001 however, does not prescribe specific details for “special processes”. Welding is regarded as a “special process”;
  • ISO 3834 was developed to identify all factors that could affect the quality of welded product and which need to be controlled at all stages, before, during and after welding.

BS EN ISO 3834 can be used by internal and external organizations, including certification bodies, to assess the manufacturer’s ability to meet customer, regulatory or the manufacturer’s own requirements

Who is it relevant to:

  • Any structural steel fabricator seeking CE Marking for their product;
  • Any welding & fabrication company;
  • Construction companies – on-site work;
  • Repair and maintenance contractors;
  • Manufacturers of products;
  • Welding workshops on sites under the same technical and quality management;
  • Owners of plant with their own workshop(s).
